Step 5 of 9

Fill in 'Waste item level'

This tab describes the waste itself — what it is and how much of it.

What to do

  1. Click the tab 8_Waste item level along the bottom of the Excel window.
  2. Enter the same unique delivery reference you used on the movement tab. This is what joins the two tabs together. One character different and DEFRA cannot match them.
  3. Fill in the rest of the row for this waste.

The main fields

  • EWC code. A 6-digit code that classifies the waste. Use only a code approved for your site. You can enter more than one, separated by a semi-colon (;) with no spaces. If you enter a single code, type an apostrophe (') in front of it so Excel does not turn it into a date.
  • Waste description. A clear description: what it is, what it is made of, and whether it may be hazardous.
  • Physical form. For example gas, liquid, solid, powder, sludge or mixed.
  • Number of containers and type of containers. Choose the container type from the drop-down list, for example [LOO] Loose (no container) or [IBC] Intermediate Bulk Container.
  • Weight unit of measurement and total weight of waste. Choose the unit first, for example tonnes or kilograms, then enter the weight from the weighbridge in that same unit.

Example (made up, not real)

Delivery reference DEL-EXAMPLE-001 · description "example food processing waste" · [LOO] Loose (no container) · 1 container · tonnes · 18.4

This is only to show the shape of a row. Never copy these values into a real report.

We cannot choose your waste code

This guide never tells you which EWC code or classification to use. Use the codes approved for your site. If you are unsure, ask the site's responsible person.

The tabs 3_European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes, 4_Disposal and recovery codes, 5_POP name and codes and 6_Haz property codes list the valid codes.

What should happen

Both tabs now have a row, and both use exactly the same delivery reference. If a field gives a drop-down arrow, you have chosen from the list rather than typing your own words.
